10 Healthy Habits for Autumn

I’ll admit it Autumn isn’t up there as one of my favourite times of the year.  Summer can seem more of a relaxed affair and with more daylight and sunshine my mood is generally in a happy place.  Then its BAAM! Back in to the routine of school and once past Halloween it’s that build up to Christmas.  Saying that I do like those first initial chilly mornings, the beauty of Autumn and having the kids back at school has it’s advantages, so ok maybe it’s not so bad?  For me when the nights start to draw in, the central heating goes on and my wardrobe switches to boots and sweaters it can be an excuse to start hibernating a little, switch to a stodgy diet and perhaps ease off on the running front.

Developing healthy habits will help to see you through the chillier weather, help to maintain a positive attitude and, fingers crossed, stave off potential weight gain.

Here are my 10 Healthy Habits for Autumn

  • If you must comfort eat make it healthy
  • Commit to a weekly Workout Schedule and log your progress
  • Revamp your running or training gear if you exercise outdoors
  • Stay hydrated; the colder weather is no excuse not to drink plenty of water
  • No Hibernating!  Stay Sociable!
  • Make one day a week a Family Day
  • Declutter
  • Unplug/Go Offline; even if it’s an hour before bedtime
  • Eat seasonal produce
  • Get outdoors more and take time to enjoy the beauty of Autumn

Ok we’ve got through January, it’s noticeably lighter and spring is on it’s way!  January surprisingly didn’t drag as much for me as normal.  Ok so I still had no money, other friends were feeling the pinch so no socialising to get rid of the January blues.  Setting my own January Goals helped me to focus on things and be more pro-active about getting things done instead of mopping around the house.  I consciously made a plan and effort to achieve each of the goals that I set, 10 in total.  Some were easy, some were harder and took a while to complete.  It’s given me the motivation to carry on setting monthly goals and see what I’ve managed to achieved at the end of the year.

So here are my new monthly goals:

  1. New Fitness Challenge for the month – Abs and Squats Challenge
  2. Repost one of my very first workouts (ideal for a beginner), I’ve got loads so why not share?
  3. Freezer Meal Prep Session – check out these ideas that you can through into your Slow Cooker from livingrichwithcoupons.com and more ideas from smartschoolhouse.com
  4. Put together a meal plan for my children’s suppers and use it! I’m using a printable meal planner from shesaved.com found on Pinterest.
  5. Re-think my fitness goals and put a new plan of action in place
  6. Organise a cinema trip with my daughter and a couple of her mates to see ‘Sing!’
  7. De-clutter the Living Room (phase 2 of my whole house de-clutter)
  8. Go Sugar free for February, read this infographic if it all looks a little daunting!
  9. Revamp some of the images on my Busyfitmama blog
  10. Create a Photo Gallery for my Kitchen

Looking back to the goals I set for January (read my blog post My January Goals) I’ve noticed that they generally focus on fitness, health, blogging, family and my messy house!  I suppose it’s what I’m all about but here’s to hoping the messy house will be a goal I achieve sooner rather than later!

10 Winter Healthy Habits

Ok it’s cold, it’s dark.  It’s easy to give in to the urge to hibernate; with the central heating cranked up, a box set or two to catch-up on and a blanket to snuggle under who would want to get out and be sociable?  All of a sudden you crave stodgy, carb-heavy food and any healthy eating habits seem to vanish.  Yep it’s winter.  Add to that the stresses of Christmas, it can be easy to throw in the towel until January when it comes to being healthy, both in mind and body.  Sorry this isn’t meant to be a negative post, quite the opposite.  I love the cosiness of winter, I love Christmas, particularly the build up to it all, but what I don’t like is feeling rubbish and down in the dumps come January.  Just like having Healthy Habits in the Summer (read my post 10 Summer Healthy Habits), which for me I find easier to maintain, I feel it’s just as important to adopt Healthy Habits during the Winter.

So here are my 10 Healthy Habits for Winter

Eat Smart

It goes without saying, try and get plenty of fruit and veg but in addition to that if you need a carb fest keep away from the refined options and go for wholewheat bread, pasta and grains. Keep away from tinned soups and make your own, less sugar that way.

Get Outside!

Wrap up and get outdoors.  Fresh air and a brisk walk can lift your mood and boost energy levels.

Socialise

Don’t hibernate, meet up with friends!  Socialising not only gives you something to look forward to but can help to reduce stress levels.

Stay Hydrated

You might feel that you don’t need to drink as much in the winter but you do; keep hydrated and your body will continue to feel the benefits.

Wash your Hands more frequently

With all those bugs and colds doing the rounds, it makes sense to wash your hands more frequently to help minimise the chance of spreading germs and ultimately catching something yourself.

Moisturise

With the central heating being on, lack of sunshine our skin can become dry and dull in the winter months.  Ramp up your skincare routine and moisturise more.

Plan and Set Goals

It’s nearly the end of year, so take this as an opportunity to reflect, re-evaluate and set goals for the next 12 months.

Get some Sleep

Getting quality sleep can help maintain your immune system.  So if you struggle to get a good nights sleep look at ways to establish a good sleep routine.

De-clutter

Why wait till Spring to de-clutter.  Bin it or bag it up for Charity!  I find it therapeutic having a good clear out, making space and getting rid of things that I no longer need.  Save it for a day when it’s cold and miserable outside, you will have done something productive instead of vegging on the sofa!

Make some time for yourself

Set aside time for yourself each day, doesn’t have to be long.  Read a book, sit down for a coffee or hit the Gym.  Doesn’t matter how long or what you do with it just as long as it’s your time!  Looking after your mental well-being is just as important as your physical well-being.

10 Summer Healthy Habits

Making small changes can have a big impact on your fitness and lifestyle.  Making healthy choices as and when are easier to maintain instead of adopting a whole change of lifestyle in one go.  Think evolution not revolution!  Changing things gradually means you are more likely to stick to them.

I lost about 28lbs a couple of years ago through eating healthier and adopting healthy habits; my blog post How re-thinking my diet led to sustainable weight loss tells how I managed to do this.  I have been able to sustain my weight loss but bad habits are starting to creep back in.  My Holiday is a few weeks ago so I’m making the effort to re-address the situation; one step at a time.

Here are my 10 Healthy Habits for the Summer!

 

Adopt a regular bedtime routine
Drink a glass of water as soon as you get up
Get outside!
Drink Green Tea
Food shop on a full stomach
Plan your meals
Have a meat-free day once a week
Put together a fitness plan
Get a Gym or Running Partner
Make some time for yourself

Sticking to healthy habits isn’t always easy.  Write them down in a list, stick them on your fridge door.  Focus on why you want to adopt these healthy habits, I always do this when I am struggling or I am hitting a brick wall especially when a huge slice of red velvet cake is threatening to de-rail me!  What ever your healthy habits may be, start today not tomorrow, next week or next month.
